Located on the outskirts of Metro Atlanta, Newnan is the county seat of Coweta County, Georgia, and is also one of the state’s fastest-growing cities. The city’s six historic neighborhoods feature many antebellum houses that survived Civil War unscathed, and their careful preservation has earned Newnan the nickname “The City of Homes.” Newnan is also known for its frequent use as a backdrop for films and television shows, including the popular AMC series, “The Walking Dead.”
The Muscogee people known as the Cowetas or Lower Creek Indians inhabited the area around present-day Newnan until the 1820s when they ceded the land to Georgia. The town of Newnan was established as the county seat of the newly formed Coweta County in 1828. Due to its large cotton industry, Newnan became a prosperous city, and the city’s economy further increased after railway service reached the area in 1851. Although Civil War conflicts came as close as three miles to Newnan, the city itself escaped damage. Modern-day Newnan is a family-oriented city valued for its great schools, fine parks and easy accessibility to the City of Atlanta.
Newnan is approximately 20 square miles in size with an elevation of 960 feet. The city is located around 30 miles to the southwest of Atlanta. Major thoroughfares include Interstate 85 (State Route 403) and U.S. Route 29.
Newnan has a subtropical climate with temperatures that average around 79 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer and around 46 degrees in the winter. The average annual rainfall is around 52 inches, with late winter and early spring being the wettest seasons and fall the driest. Afternoon thunderstorms during the summer are not uncommon.
