Previously home to the Creek Indian Tribe, LaGrange was settled by European immigrants in the early 1800s. During the Civil War, the city was defended by a women’s group called the Nancy Harts Militia. They held their own until Colonel Oscar LaGrange led Federal troops into the area after the Confederate defeat in West Point. The Nancy Harts then surrendered, and as a result, the Union troops spared many LaGrange homesteads. To show their gratitude, the women hosted a homemade dinner for LaGrange and his men, and shortly afterward, Robert E. Lee surrendered.
Between the late 1800s and the mid-1900s, LaGrange became a railroad hub and a center for the manufacture of textiles. Although the textile business waned after the 1950s, new industry developed in the area, and with it came many new employment opportunities. With the completion of Interstates 85 and 185, both of which traverse the city, LaGrange was able to maintain its position as a transportation hub.
Today, LaGrange is home to Interface, the largest manufacturer of carpet tile worldwide. Founded in 1973, the company is still going strong today. Nearby West Point, GA, is the site of the only KIA Motors assembly plant in the U.S., and numerous suppliers for KIA are centered in LaGrange. The North American Caterpillar Forestry Division is headquartered in LaGrange, and the city itself provides electricity, water, natural gas, sewer, trash collection and telecommunication services for itself and the surrounding area.
In 2000, the Intelligent Community Forum cited LaGrange as the Intelligent Community of the Year, a distinction that has also been received by cities like Toronto, New York, Glasgow and Singapore. The City of LaGrange bills itself as one of the best southeastern small towns in the U.S. to practice medicine, while USA Today called LaGrange High School “the best high school in Georgia and one of the best in the nation.”
LaGrange offers residents close proximity to Atlanta but has a cost of living that’s almost 9 percent less.
